Grotte di Annibale
Grotte di Annibale
The Grotte di Annibale in Nocera Superiore can be reached via a hiking trail that starts near Petraro Pucciano and connects to the Percorso della Salute. It is a medium-difficulty hike, approximately 3.5 km long, requiring an average walking time of 1.5 to 2 hours.
According to popular tradition, the Carthaginian leader Hannibal used these caves as a refuge during his passage through the Nuceria area in 216 BC, after the Battle of Cannae.
Starting point
The area is usually reached via the Percorso della Salute, located at the foot of the Lattari Mountains and accessible from the Petraro area, near the Dodeca supermarket.
Difficulty: easy/medium up to the Percorso della Salute; medium towards the Grotte di Annibale
Length: about 2 km for the Percorso della Salute; about 3.5 km to reach the caves
Average duration: 45-60 minutes for the Percorso della Salute; 1.5 to 2 hours for the hike to the caves
General information
It is recommended to walk the route wearing trekking shoes or comfortable footwear, bringing water and, for those who wish to approach the caves, also a flashlight. The best time to visit the area is spring or autumn, when temperatures are milder and the landscape offers ideal conditions for walking.
