Anfiteatro Romano

The Roman Amphitheatre of ancient Nuceria is located in the north-western area of the city walls, today in the Grotti locality. For centuries, it remained hidden beneath mud and alluvial deposits, until it disappeared from historical memory and medieval sources.

The monument was identified in 1926 by Matteo Fresa, who initially believed it to be later than the Amphitheatre of Pompeii. Later studies by Werner Johannowsky instead dated it back to the 1st century BC, thanks to the analysis of its original structures in opus reticulatum. The building must have been of considerable size, with a major axis of about 120 metres, similar to that of the Amphitheatre of Pozzuoli. Today, some parts of the ancient amphitheatre can still be accessed through the cellars of modern houses built along its perimeter.

Opening hours

The Roman Amphitheatre has no opening hours and is located on private property, therefore it is not accessible to the public.
